Flocculant Efficiency

Flocculant efficiency is the ability of a flocculant to promote the aggregation and separation of suspended particles, cells, or biological materials from a liquid. Flocculants work by reducing electrostatic repulsion between dispersed particles or by linking them through polymer bridging, allowing small particles to form larger flocs that settle or can be removed by filtration. In biology, evaluating flocculant efficiency helps optimize cell harvesting, biomass recovery, clarification of culture fluids, and treatment of biologically derived wastewater. Performance depends on factors such as flocculant type, concentration, particle properties, pH, mixing conditions, and settling time.

The interaction and sedimentation of the clay and bacterial cells within the marine realm, observed in natural environments, can be best investigated in a controlled lab environment. Here, we describe a detailed protocol, which outlines a novel method for measuring the sedimentation rate of clay and cyanobacterial floccules.

Virus concentration from environmental water and wastewater samples is a challenging task, carried out primarily for the identification and quantification of viruses. While several virus concentration methods have been developed and tested, we demonstrate here the effectiveness of ultrafiltration and skimmed milk flocculation for RNA viruses with different sample types.

Efficiency of Liquid-liquid Extraction

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is a separation technique used instead of distillation when either: (a) the relative volatilities of the compounds to be separated are very similar; (b) one or more of the mixture components are temperature sensitive even near ambient conditions; (c) the distillation would require a very low pressure or a very high distillate/feed...

Output Efficiency: Achieving Output Efficiency

2025

Output efficiency happens when resources are used in a way that balances what people want with how goods are produced. This means the marginal rate of substitution (MRS) matches the marginal rate of transformation (MRT). When this balance is reached, the economy makes the most of its resources without waste.Take the example of bread and milk. If consumers are happy to trade 2 loaves of bread for 1 liter of milk, the MRS is 2. But if producers only need to give up 1 loaf of bread to produce 1...
