Methylene Chloride

Methylene chloride, also called dichloromethane, is a volatile chlorinated solvent used to separate and process chemical compounds, including materials relevant to biological research. Its moderate polarity, low boiling point, and ability to dissolve many organic substances allow it to partition target molecules from aqueous samples and evaporate readily after extraction. In biology, methylene chloride can support lipid and metabolite extraction, chromatography, and preparation of organic-phase samples for analysis. Because its vapors can affect the nervous system and prolonged exposure presents health risks, experiments require appropriate ventilation, protective equipment, and careful solvent handling.
