Neuroblastoma Cell Lines

Neuroblastoma cell lines are laboratory-grown tumor cells derived from neuroblastoma, a cancer of developing sympathetic nervous system tissues, and provide reproducible models for studying tumor biology. Maintained under controlled culture conditions, these cells preserve features such as neuronal differentiation potential, abnormal growth, and genetic alterations that can influence behavior, including amplification of the MYCN oncogene in some lines. Researchers use neuroblastoma cell lines to investigate signaling pathways, proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and responses to anticancer treatments. Comparing lines with distinct molecular profiles helps clarify disease mechanisms, evaluate therapeutic candidates, and support the development of more precise approaches to pediatric cancer research.

Differentiation of a Human Neuroblastoma Cell Line into Mature Neurons

2025

This video demonstrates a technique for transforming undifferentiated SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells into fully differentiated mature neurons using a systematic passaging technique. This involves culturing the cells in a series of media with gradually decreasing serum levels to inhibit the proliferation of epithelial-like cells while promoting the differentiation and proliferation of neuron-like cells. Additionally, the media is supplemented with retinoic acid and specific growth factors that...

It is critical in neurobiology and neurovirology to have a reliable, replicable in vitro system that serves as a translational model for what occurs in vivo in human neurons. This protocol describes how to culture and differentiate SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells into viable neurons for use in in vitro applications.
