Submandibular Ganglion

The submandibular ganglion is a parasympathetic nerve ganglion in the head that relays signals controlling salivary gland secretion. Preganglionic fibers originate in the superior salivatory nucleus, travel with the facial nerve through the chorda tympani, and join the lingual nerve before synapsing in the ganglion; postganglionic fibers then reach the submandibular and sublingual glands, while sensory and sympathetic fibers may pass through without synapsing. Studying this structure helps explain autonomic control of saliva production and supports anatomical interpretation of cranial nerve pathways, oral function, and clinical conditions affecting salivation or the lingual nerve.

A protocol for the cannulation of the mouse submandibular salivary gland via the Wharton's duct is described. For this experiment, the trypan blue solution is used as a dyer to demonstrate how this technique effectively delivers infusions into the targeted gland, and to suggest the reliability of this new approach as a potential clinical drug/cell therapy for the regeneration of salivary glands.

Retroductal Submandibular Gland Instillation and Localized Fractionated Irradiation in a Rat Model of Salivary Hypofunction

Salivary gland hypofunction, a major adverse effect of head and neck radiotherapy diminishes a patient's quality of life. The demonstration of efficacy of new therapies in animal models is a prerequisite before clinical transition. This protocol describes retroductal administration and local irradiation of rat submandibular glands.

Isolating Vestibular Ganglion Neurons From a Mouse Inner Ear

2025

This video showcases a method for isolating vestibular neurons from a mouse pup's inner ear. It meticulously outlines the steps involved in dissecting the inner ear, harvesting the vestibular ganglion, and subsequently dissociating the ganglion into single cells. These cells are then cultured on glass-bottom dishes to establish a vestibular neuron culture.

Local drug delivery to the submandibular glands is of interest in understanding salivary gland biology and for the development of novel therapeutics. We present an updated and detailed retroductal injection protocol, designed to improve delivery accuracy and experimental reproducibility. The application presented herein is the delivery of polymeric nanoparticles.

We demonstrate an in vivo electroporation protocol for transfecting single or small clusters of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and other retinal cell types in postnatal mice over a wide range of ages. The ability to label and genetically manipulate postnatal RGCs in vivo is a powerful tool for developmental studies.
