Urogenital Microbiota

Urogenital microbiota refers to the communities of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms inhabiting the urinary and reproductive tracts, where they influence tissue health and susceptibility to infection. These microbes interact with host cells and one another through colonization, competition for nutrients, production of metabolites, and modification of local conditions such as pH; in some sites, estrogen-associated glycogen supports lactic acid production by Lactobacillus species. In biology and medicine, profiling urogenital microbiota helps characterize healthy microbial communities and investigate conditions including urinary tract infections, bacterial vaginosis, infertility, and sexually transmitted infections. This research may support improved diagnostics, targeted probiotics, and microbiome-based therapies.

Microbiota of the Urogenital Tract

2026

The human urogenital system, once thought to be sterile in healthy individuals, is now recognized as a complex microbial habitat. Advancements in molecular sequencing techniques have revealed that even in healthy adults, the kidneys and bladder harbor microbial populations similar to those found in the distal urethra, albeit in much lower abundance. These resident microorganisms, while generally innocuous, can become opportunistic pathogens under conditions that alter the urogenital...

Here, we describe an efficient high throughput in situ hybridization (ISH) method for visualizing patterns of mRNA expression in developing fetal mouse prostate tissue sections. The method can be easily adapted to visualize mRNA expression patterns in other mouse tissues or in tissues from other species.

Formation of Human Prostate Epithelium Using Tissue Recombination of Rodent Urogenital Sinus Mesenchyme and Human Stem Cells

To unravel the earliest molecular mechanisms underlying prostate cancer initiation, novel and innovative human model systems and approaches are desperately needed. The potential of pre-prostatic urogenital sinus mesenchyme (UGSM) to induce pluripotent stem cell populations to form human prostate epithelium is a powerful experimental tool in prostate research.

Extracting Prostate from Mouse Urogenital System: A Technique to Separate Prostate Gland from Other Urinary and Genital System Organs in Male Mouse

2023

In this video, we describe the procedure for the dissection of the urogenital system or UGS from a male mouse model. This UGS is further dissected ex vivo to isolate the prostate gland and study its role in prostate cancer development.

Assessing the Role of Gut Microbiota in Modulating Hepatitis B Infection in Mice

Take a control mouse with a normal gut microbiota and an experimental mouse with depleted gut microbiota. The depletion compromises the integrity of the gut barrier. This enables bacteria to translocate through the blood vessel into the liver tissue.Inject both mice with the hepatitis B virus or HBV plasmid to induce an HBV infection in the liver tissue. In the control mouse, the T cell detects an infected liver cell through the interaction of its receptors with viral antigens, and produces...
