FBS and PBS are common laboratory reagents that support, maintain, and process biological samples, making them important in cancer research. Fetal bovine serum (FBS) supplies cultured cells with proteins, hormones, lipids, and growth-supporting factors, while phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) uses balanced salts to maintain near-physiological pH and osmotic conditions during handling. Together, they support cancer cell culture, sample washing, reagent dilution, immunostaining, and other experimental workflows. Consistent use of these solutions helps preserve cell viability, reduce handling-related variability, and produce reliable results in studies of tumor biology, drug responses, and cellular behavior.

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for isolating murine primary retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) by using flow cytometry. This method allows for the future study of RGCs, with the goal of better understanding the major decline in visual acuity that results from the loss of functional RGCs in neurodegenerative diseases.

Millions of people suffer from retinal degenerative diseases that result in irreversible blindness. A common element of many of these diseases is the loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). This detailed protocol describes the isolation of primary murine RGCs by positive and negative selection with flow cytometry.

Here, we describe a technique to isolate the side population cells from a zebrafish model of myc-induced T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). This side population assay is highly sensitive and is described for zebrafish T-ALL, but it may be applicable to other malignant and non-malignant zebrafish cell types.
