Gastric Conduit Creation

Gastric conduit creation is a reconstructive surgical technique that reshapes the stomach into a narrow tube to restore digestive continuity after removal of part or all of the esophagus. During the procedure, surgeons mobilize the stomach, use linear stapling or surgical division to form a tubular conduit, and position it in the chest or neck for connection to the remaining esophagus. In cancer research and care, this approach supports esophagectomy for esophageal or gastroesophageal junction tumors while preserving blood supply through the right gastroepiploic vessels. Studying conduit design, perfusion, and healing helps reduce leaks, strictures, and other postoperative complications.

Source: Lee, Y., et.al. Transplantation of Schwann Cells Inside PVDF-TrFE Conduits to Bridge Transected Rat Spinal Cord Stumps to Promote Axon Regeneration Across the Gap. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the use of a piezoelectric polymer conduit seeded with Schwann cells to promote axon regeneration in a transected rat spinal cord. The conduit provides structural guidance, while its bioelectric properties stimulate neurite outgrowth. Schwann cells within the conduit secrete...

This article describes a technique to insert a hollow conduit between the spinal cord stumps after complete transection and fill with Schwann cells (SCs) and injectable basement membrane matrix in order to bridge and promote axon regeneration across the gap.

Creation of Reversible Cholestatic Rat Model

Cholestasis is a clinical condition commonly encountered by both surgeons and gastroenterologists. Creation of a reversible cholestatic rat model can be challenging in view of the smaller size and unique hepatopancreatobiliary anatomy in rats. This video article demonstrates the creation of a reversible cholestatic model.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Procedure: A Bariatric Surgical Procedure for Gastric Resectioning in Murine Model

2025

This video describes a bariatric surgery-Roux-en-Y procedure. This involves the cutting of the jejunum- the middle portion of the intestine- to generate two intestinal limbs. The biliary limb is attached to the existing intestinal loop and the alimentary limb is attached to the stomach, creating a gastric bypass. The gastric bypass created here helps to decrease the nutrient uptake and efficiently reduces body weight.
