Nickel Counter Electrode

A nickel counter electrode is the auxiliary electrode in an electrochemical cell that completes the circuit and carries current while the working electrode undergoes the reaction of interest. In a three-electrode system, the potentiostat controls the working-electrode potential against a reference electrode, while nickel supports the complementary oxidation or reduction reaction by accepting or supplying electrons through the electrolyte. Its conductivity, surface chemistry, and catalytic activity make it useful in electrochemical measurements, alkaline water electrolysis, and studies of nickel-based electrocatalysts. Careful selection of electrolyte and operating conditions is important because nickel can participate in reactions or undergo surface changes that influence measured performance.

We present a unique platform for characterizing electrode surfaces in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) that allows simultaneous performance of multiple characterization techniques (e.g. in situ Raman spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy alongside electrochemical measurements). Complementary information from these analyses may help to advance toward a more profound understanding of electrode reaction and degradation mechanisms, providing insights into rational design of better materials for...

Standard Electrode Potentials

On comparing the reactivity of silver and lead, it is observed that the two ionic species, Ag+ (aq) and Pb2+ (aq), show a difference in their redox reactivity towards copper: the silver ion undergoes spontaneous reduction, while the lead ion does not. This relative redox activity can be easily quantified in electrochemical cells by a property called cell potential. This property is commonly known as cell voltage in electrochemistry, and it is a measure of the energy which accompanies the charge...
