Per Mole Basis

Per mole basis is a way of expressing a chemical quantity for a fixed amount of substance, specifically one mole, so measurements can be compared across samples of different sizes. Chemists calculate it by dividing an extensive quantity, such as mass, energy, volume, or enthalpy change, by the number of moles involved, using the mole as a counting unit linked to Avogadro’s number. This normalization produces values such as molar mass, molar volume, and molar enthalpy, which connect measurable laboratory data to molecular-scale composition. Per mole calculations support stoichiometry, thermodynamic analysis, solution preparation, and quantitative comparisons in chemical research.

Formula Mass and Mole Concepts of Compounds

Formula Mass of Covalent Compounds Chemical formulas represent the elemental makeup of substances. For covalent compounds, the formula represents the numbers and types of atoms composing a single molecule of the substance; therefore, the formula mass may be correctly referred to as a molecular mass. The molecular formula of chloroform (CHCl3), a covalent compound, indicates that a single molecule contains one carbon atom, one hydrogen atom, and three chlorine atoms. The average molecular mass...

Accrual Basis of Accounting

2025

Accrual basis accounting records revenues and expenses when they are earned or incurred, regardless of when the associated cash is received or paid. This approach emphasizes the economic substance of transactions, aligning financial reporting with the actual timing of business activity rather than the cash flow timeline. Accrual accounting provides a comprehensive and consistent view of financial performance by recognizing income when goods or services are delivered and expenses when they...

Chemical Stoichiometry and Gases: Using Ideal Gas Law to Determine Moles

2020

Chemical stoichiometry describes the quantitative relationships between reactants and products in chemical reactions. In addition to measuring quantities of reactants and products using masses for solids and volumes in conjunction with the molarity for solutions; now, the gas volumes can also be used to indicate quantities. If the volume, pressure, and temperature of a gas is known, then the ideal gas equation to calculate how many moles of the gas are present, can be used. Conversely, if the...

Mixtures of Gases: Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures and Mole Fractions

Unless individual gases chemically react with each other, the individual gases in a mixture of gases do not affect each other’s pressure. Each gas in a mixture exerts the same pressure that it would exert if it were present alone in the container. The pressure exerted by each individual gas in a mixture is called its partial pressure. This means that in a mixture containing three different gases A, B, and C, if PA is the partial pressure of gas A; PB is the partial pressure of gas B; PC is the...

Cash Basis of Accounting

2025

The cash basis of accounting records revenues and expenses strictly based on the timing of cash transactions. Under this approach, income is recognized only when cash is received, and expenses are recorded only when payments are made. This method deviates from accrual accounting, which recognizes revenues when earned and expenses when incurred, regardless of cash movement. The primary appeal of the cash basis lies in its simplicity. It suits small businesses, sole proprietors, and service-based...
