Intra-abdominal Pressure

Intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) is the pressure within the abdominal cavity, an important clinical parameter because abnormal values can compromise organ function. It reflects the balance among abdominal contents, fluid or gas accumulation, and the compliance of the abdominal wall; clinicians commonly estimate it by measuring bladder pressure through a urinary catheter, usually at end-expiration with the patient supine. Persistent IAP above 12 mmHg indicates intra-abdominal hypertension, while pressures above 20 mmHg accompanied by new organ dysfunction define abdominal compartment syndrome. Monitoring IAP supports early recognition, risk assessment, and management of critically ill patients after trauma, surgery, or fluid resuscitation.

Abdominal Exam III: Palpation

Source: Alexander Goldfarb, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, MA Abdominal palpation, if performed correctly, allows for examination of the large and relatively superficial organs; for a skilled examiner, it allows for assessment of the smaller and deeper structures as well. The amount of information that can be obtained by palpation of the abdominal area also depends on the anatomical characteristics of the patient. For example, obesity might make...

Abdominal Exam II: Percussion

Source: Alexander Goldfarb, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, MA Medical percussion is based on the difference in pitch between the sounds elicited by tapping on the body wall. The auditory response to tapping depends on the ease with which the body wall vibrates, and is influenced by underlying organs, strength of the stroke, and the state of the body wall. There are three main medical percussion sounds: resonance (heard over lungs), tympany (heard over...

Abdominal Exam IV: Acute Abdominal Pain Assessment

Source: Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Abdominal pain is a frequent presenting concern in both the emergency department and the office setting. Acute abdominal pain is defined as pain lasting less than seven days, while an acute abdomen refers to the abrupt onset of severe abdominal pain with features suggesting a surgically intervenable process. The differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain is broad; thus, clinicians must have a...

2023

In this video, we demonstrate intra-uterine injection of ovarian cancer cells in a mouse model. This orthotopic murine model helps us to non-invasively monitor tumor growth and evaluate the efficacy of new therapies for the prevention and treatment of recurrent ovarian cancer.

A Novel Non-invasive Method for the Detection of Elevated Intra-compartmental Pressures of the Leg

An ultrasound probe coupled with a pressure sensor is used to assess the intra-compartmental pressure of the leg by directly measuring the compartment fascia flattening pressure (CFFP). This non-invasive protocol will provide reliable assessment of the pressure inside the anterior muscular compartment of the lower leg.
