Sensory Testing

Sensory testing is the systematic assessment of how a person detects and perceives stimuli, providing essential information about the function of sensory pathways in clinical care. During testing, clinicians apply controlled stimuli such as light touch, pressure, vibration, temperature, or pinprick and compare the patient’s reported responses across body regions and sides. Patterns of reduced, exaggerated, or abnormal sensation can help identify peripheral nerve damage, spinal cord or brain disorders, and changes associated with disease or injury. Standardized sensory examinations also support diagnosis, treatment planning, monitoring of recovery, and evaluation of clinical interventions.

We describe how to implement a battery of behavioral tasks to examine the processing and integration of sensory stimuli in children with ASD. The goal is to characterize individual differences in temporal processing of simple auditory and visual stimuli and relate these to higher order perceptual skills like speech perception.

Kaplan, MD; Neurology, Brigham and Women's/Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA A complete sensory examination consists of testing primary sensory modalities as well as cortical sensory function. Primary sensory modalities include pain, temperature, light touch, vibration, and joint position sense. Sensation of the face is discussed in the videos Cranial Nerves Exam I and II, as are the special senses of smell, vision, taste, and...
