Cannon-fenske Viscometer

The Cannon-Fenske viscometer is a glass capillary instrument used to measure the kinematic viscosity of transparent, Newtonian liquids, an important property in engineering fluid characterization and quality control. A liquid flows through a calibrated capillary under gravity, and the instrument determines its viscosity from the measured efflux time, typically with temperature carefully controlled because viscosity changes with temperature. Engineers use this method to compare lubricants, fuels, solvents, polymers, and other liquid materials, supporting formulation, process monitoring, and performance evaluation. Its simple design provides reproducible measurements when samples are clean and the specified testing conditions are maintained.

Physiological Theories: Cannon-Bard Theory of Emotion

2025

The Cannon-Bard theory of emotion, proposed by Walter Cannon and Philip Bard, challenges the notion that emotions are solely the result of physiological responses. Instead, this theory suggests that emotional experiences and physiological arousal occur simultaneously but operate through independent mechanisms. This dual response is initiated by the brain, specifically by the thalamus, which plays a critical role in processing sensory information. Upon perceiving a stimulus, such as a dangerous...

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Viscosity is a measure of a fluid's resistance to flow, and it is a useful parameter in the design of efficient product processing and quality control in a wide range of industries. A variety of viscometers are used to obtain the most accurate readings of experimental materials. The standard method of measuring viscosity is through a glass tube viscometer, which...

The Effects of Shear Stress on Platelets Treated with Antibodies Against Mechanosensory Receptors

2025

This video demonstrates the method to assess the impact of shear stress on platelets. Antibody treatment induces dissociation and conformational changes in mechanoreceptor complexes, activating the platelets and expressing markers on the surface. These markers are observed via immunostaining and flow cytometry.

Visualization of High Speed Liquid Jet Impaction on a Moving Surface

Two experimental devices for examining liquid jet impingement on a high-speed moving surface are described: an air cannon device and a spinning disk device. The apparatuses are used to determine optimal approaches to the application of liquid friction modifier (LFM) onto rail tracks for top-of-rail friction control.
