Photonic Crystal

A photonic crystal is a material with a periodic variation in refractive index that controls how electromagnetic waves propagate, making it important for engineering compact optical devices. Its repeating structure creates photonic band gaps, frequency ranges in which light cannot travel through the material, while defects or designed interfaces can confine, guide, or redirect selected wavelengths. Engineers use photonic crystals to develop optical filters, waveguides, resonant cavities, sensors, and components for integrated photonics. By tailoring the lattice geometry, materials, and structural defects, researchers can tune light-matter interactions and improve the performance, selectivity, and miniaturization of photonic systems.

2012

Use of photonic crystal slow light waveguides and cavities has been widely adopted by the photonics community in many differing applications. Therefore fabrication and characterization of these devices are of great interest. This paper outlines our fabrication technique and two optical characterization methods, namely: interferometric (waveguides) and resonant scattering (cavities).

Protein Crystallization

2023

Protein crystallization, obtaining a solid lattice of biomolecules, elucidates protein structure and enables the study of protein function. Crystallization involves drying purified protein under a combination of many factors, including pH, temperature, ionic strength, and protein concentration. Once crystals are obtained, the protein structure can be elucidated by x-ray diffraction and computation of an electron density model. This video introduces protein crystallization and shows a general...

This study presents a methodology to prepare 3D, biodegradable, foam-like cell scaffolds based on biocompatible side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Confocal microscopy experiments show that foam-like LCEs allow for cell attachment, proliferation, and the spontaneous alignment of C2C12s myoblasts.
