Stochastic Control

Stochastic control is the study of how to make decisions over time when system behavior is influenced by randomness, with the goal of optimizing a defined performance measure. It models uncertainty through stochastic processes and uses observations to select control actions, often through feedback policies derived from dynamic programming and Bellman equations. In engineering, these methods guide resource allocation, estimation, motion planning, and operation of systems such as robots, autonomous vehicles, communication networks, and power grids. By balancing expected performance against risk and constraints, stochastic control supports reliable operation despite noise, incomplete information, and changing environments.

Galvanic vestibular stimulation in humans exhibits improvements in vestibular function. However, it is unknown how these effects occur. Here, we describe how to apply sinusoidal and stochastic electrical noise and evaluate appropriate stimulus amplitudes in individual medial vestibular nucleus neurons in the C57BL/6 mouse.

Control System Problem

In an open-loop system, such as a basic thermostat, the poles of the transfer function influence the system's response but do not determine its stability. However, when feedback is introduced to form a closed-loop system, such as an advanced thermostat that adjusts heating based on room temperature, stability is governed by the new poles of the closed-loop transfer function. When forming a closed-loop system, issues can arise if the poles cross into the unstable region, leading to potential...
