Cardiovascular Toxicology

Cardiovascular toxicology is the study of how drugs, chemicals, and other exposures injure or alter the heart and vascular system, supporting safer medical treatment and public health decisions. It examines mechanisms such as ion-channel disruption, oxidative stress, endothelial injury, and altered autonomic signaling, which can change cardiac rhythm, contractility, blood pressure, or vascular tone. In medicine, cardiovascular toxicology guides preclinical and clinical evaluation of therapies, helps identify adverse cardiovascular effects, and supports risk assessment for environmental or occupational exposures. Integrated approaches using electrocardiography, imaging, functional assays, and biomarkers can clarify toxicity pathways and improve monitoring, prevention, and treatment.

The objective of the study was to assess the biological impact of 15 cigarette smoke constituents using a combination of an impedance-based real time cell analyzer and a high-content screening (HCS)-based platform for toxicological assessment in vitro. This study provides information on effective doses, toxicity and modes of action of the tested compounds.

Overview of the Cardiovascular System

2024

The cardiovascular system is a vital transportation system in the body. It comprises the heart and blood vessels and facilitates the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products. Heart The heart is the central pump of the cardiovascular system that circulates blood throughout the body. It comprises two atria receiving the blood and two ventricles pumping blood out of the heart. Their rhythmic contractions, called heartbeats, ensure that blood flow remains continuous. Blood Vessels Blood...

Regulation of the Cardiovascular System

The regulation of the cardiovascular system allows the body to adapt to various demands and maintain homeostasis. The regulation of the cardiovascular system involves the autonomic nervous system (ANS), baroreceptors, and chemoreceptors, ensuring that heart rate and blood pressure are appropriately modulated in response to varying physiological demands. The ANS comprises two main divisions: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic nervous system enhances...

Here we present a protocol to assess cardiopulmonary function in awake swine, at rest and during graded treadmill exercise. Chronic instrumentation allows for repeated hemodynamic measurements uninfluenced by cardiodepressive anesthetic agents.

Assessment of the Cardiovascular System II: Inspection

2025

Inspection is the initial step in assessing the cardiovascular system. It involves a detailed visual examination that provides crucial information about a patient's circulatory and cardiac health. This systematic process, conducted from head to toe, helps identify signs of cardiovascular conditions by observing physical appearance, skin and mucous membranes, jugular and carotid pulsations, chest symmetry, and the condition of the extremities. Head and Neck General Appearance: With the patient...
