Carotid Ultrasound

Carotid ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to assess the carotid arteries, which supply blood to the brain, and identify changes associated with stroke risk. During the examination, B-mode imaging shows the artery walls and lumen, while Doppler ultrasound measures the direction and velocity of blood flow; abnormal velocities can indicate narrowing, or stenosis, often caused by atherosclerotic plaque. In medicine, carotid ultrasound supports screening and diagnosis of carotid artery disease, helps guide treatment decisions, and enables follow-up without ionizing radiation. Its accessibility and real-time assessment make it valuable in vascular and cerebrovascular care.

This describes a partial carotid ligation surgery, which causes disturbed flow conditions and subsequent atherosclerosis development (in two weeks) with intraplaque neo-vascularization (in four weeks) in the mouse common carotid artery. We also describe a novel method of RNA isolation from the carotid intima, providing high purity endothelial RNA.

Using Point of Care Ultrasound to Augment Acquisition of Physical Exam Skills: Veins and Arteries

Source: Joseph H. Donroe, Rachel Liu; Yale School of Medicine, USA Vascular diseases make up most cases of emergency hospitalization and carry a high mortality risk. Point-of-care ultrasound or POCUS enables accurate diagnosis of these diseases and shortens the time between detection of the cause and selection of appropriate treatment strategies, thus, reducing the patient mortality rate. POCUS offers a safe, low-cost, and less invasive bedside tool for examining arteries and veins, besides its...
