Cotton Swab Test

A cotton swab test is a diagnostic sampling method that collects cells, secretions, or microorganisms from a body site for laboratory analysis. A sterile swab is rotated against a targeted surface, such as the throat, nose, skin, or genital tract, then placed in transport medium or applied directly to a test system; the specimen may undergo culture, antigen detection, or nucleic acid amplification. Clinicians use these tests to identify infections, guide treatment decisions, and monitor disease transmission. Accurate site selection, collection technique, timing, and specimen handling are essential because poor sampling can produce inconclusive or misleading results.

2016

To investigate simple fabrication approaches for multiple assay needs, we created a fluid-absorbing channel system made of cotton material. This device was used to establish a multiple detection platform, and solve contamination issues that commonly affect lateral flow-based biomedical devices, for clinical urinalysis of nitrite, total protein, and urobilinogen.

(2016)This video demonstrates the quantification of vaginal Group B Streptococcus (GBS) load in a mouse model using swabbing and chromogenic culture. It outlines the steps involved in sample collection, plating, and colony counting to quantify GBS load in the mouse vaginal lumen.

We present the detailed protocol for Agrobacterium-mediated virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) assay in cotton. The tobacco rattle virus (TRV)-derived VIGS vectors were deployed to induce RNA silencing of cotton GrCLA1, Cloroplastos alterados 1 gene. The albino phenotype caused by silencing GrCLA1 was observed at the seedling stage within 2 weeks after inoculation.
