Hernia Sac Entrapment

Hernia sac entrapment is a surgical condition in which an organ or tissue becomes trapped within a hernia sac, preventing its normal return to the abdominal cavity. Entrapment can produce incarceration, while continued pressure at the hernia neck may impair venous drainage and arterial blood flow, leading to strangulation, ischemia, and tissue injury. In medicine, recognizing this progression is essential for assessing pain, tenderness, irreducibility, bowel obstruction, and other warning signs. Clinical examination and imaging help define the hernia’s contents and vascular status, guiding timely reduction when appropriate or urgent surgical repair to prevent necrosis and other complications.

This manuscript describes methods associated with creation and repair of a ventral abdominal wall defect (hernia). This model can be used to study repair strategies such as those that use implanted materials. In this manuscript, repair of the experimental hernia with porcine small intestinal submucosa is presented as an example.

A hiatal hernia is the abnormal protrusion of the stomach or other abdominal organs through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm into the thoracic cavity.Normally, the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) lies below the diaphragm and is supported by the phrenoesophageal membrane, the diaphragmatic crura, and connective tissues. Weakening of these structures—due to aging, congenital defects like a short esophagus, or increased intra-abdominal pressure from coughing, obesity, pregnancy, or heavy...
