Ho-1 Expression

HO-1 expression refers to the production and regulation of heme oxygenase-1, an inducible cellular response that helps manage heme and protect tissues during stress. Encoded by HMOX1, HO-1 increases in response to oxidative stress, hypoxia, and inflammation, while the enzyme degrades heme into biliverdin, carbon monoxide, and iron, linking gene regulation to antioxidant and stress-response pathways. In medicine, measuring HO-1 expression supports research into tissue injury, inflammation, vascular dysfunction, and disease progression. Its context-dependent protective effects also make HO-1 a focus of biomarker research and therapeutic strategies that modulate cellular stress responses.

The HO-stimulated translocation assay monitors single-strand annealing following the creation of DNA double-strand breaks at multiple loci in diploid Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This mechanism may model genome rearrangements in somatic cells of higher eukaryotes following exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation.
