Right Ventricular Apex

The right ventricular apex is the inferior, pointed region of the right ventricle, a heart chamber that receives systemic venous blood and pumps it to the lungs. During ventricular systole, myocardial fibers and trabeculae in this region contract with the ventricular wall to help move blood toward the pulmonary valve, while coordinated motion supports efficient right-sided circulation. Clinicians assess the apex with echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate regional wall motion, chamber function, and structural abnormalities. Its appearance and movement can aid assessment of right ventricular failure, pulmonary hypertension, congenital heart disease, and selected cardiomyopathies.

Here, we describe the preparation of viable ventricular slices from adult mice and their use for sharp electrode action potential recordings. These multicellular preparations provide a preserved in vivo like tissue structure, which makes them a valuable model for electrophysiological and pharmacological studies in vitro.

Measuring left ventricular pressure (LV) in embryonic and neonatal mice is described. Pressure is measured by inserting a needle connected to a fluid-filled transducer into the LV under ultrasound guidance. Care must be taken to maintain normal cardiac function during the experimental protocol.

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension and Assessment of Right Ventricular Function in the Piglet

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) and Right Ventricular (RV) dysfunction were induced in piglets by progressive obstruction of the pulmonary arteries. Consequences were remarkably similar to those observed in CTEPH patients. This animal model would be a very useful tool for pathophysiology and therapeutic experiments on CTEPH and RV failure.
