Surface Temperature Measurement

Surface temperature measurement is the assessment of temperature at the skin or another external surface, providing a noninvasive indicator of thermal changes in the body. Contact thermometers detect heat through direct contact, while infrared sensors estimate temperature by measuring emitted thermal radiation without touching the patient. In medicine, these methods support fever screening, monitoring of inflammation, evaluating peripheral circulation, and assessing wound or tissue conditions. Because surface readings can be influenced by ambient temperature, blood flow, moisture, and measurement site, standardized technique and appropriate interpretation are essential for distinguishing localized changes from broader physiological patterns.

A thermometer measures body temperature. The common sites for measuring body temperature are the oral cavity, axillary region, temporal artery, and skin surface, such as the forehead, abdomen, and axilla. True core body temperature is assessed in the rectum, tympanic membrane, pulmonary artery, esophagus, and urinary bladder. Oral: When assessing oral temperature, the thermometer tip should be placed under the tongue in the posterior sublingual pocket. It offers accurate readings and can be...

Body temperature can be assessed using various devices and measured in Celsius or Fahrenheit. Glass-bulb Thermometer: Glass-bulb thermometers are hollow glass tubes with a bulb tip containing liquid such as ethanol or mercury. Historically, glass bulb mercury thermometers were the standard device to measure body temperature. Today, mercury thermometers are prohibited in many countries due to the hazardous effects of mercury and the risk of exposure if the glass bulb breaks. In general,...

Preparation and High-temperature Anti-adhesion Behavior of a Slippery Surface on Stainless Steel

Slippery surfaces provide a new way to solve the adhesion problem. This protocol describes how to fabricate slippery surfaces at high temperatures. The results demonstrate that the slippery surfaces showed anti-wetting for liquids and a remarkable anti-adhesion effect on soft tissues at high temperatures.
