Temporal Neocortex Resection

Temporal neocortex resection is a neurosurgical procedure that removes abnormal tissue from the outer cortical layers of the temporal lobe to treat disease while preserving essential brain function. Surgeons localize the pathological region using neurological evaluation, brain imaging, and, when needed, electrophysiological mapping, then excise the targeted neocortex while protecting language, memory, sensory, and motor networks. The procedure is most commonly considered for medication-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy and may also be used when tumors or other focal lesions involve the temporal cortex. Its success depends on accurate localization, careful functional mapping, and balancing disease control with preservation of cognition and quality of life.

Source: Alomari, S., et al. Implementation of Minimally Invasive Brain Tumor Resection in Rodents for High Viability Tissue Collection. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)This video demonstrates the use of a minimally invasive resection system (MIRS) to excise tumor tissue from an anesthetized mouse implanted with a tumor. The procedure involves securing the mouse onto a stereotactic frame, reopening the previous surgical site to access the brain, and inserting a specialized cannula that utilizes suction and a...

Source: Rennert, R. C., et al. Comprehensive Endovascular and Open Surgical Management of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations. J. Vis. Exp. (2017).This video demonstrates the open surgical resection of a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in a human brain. The procedure involves creating a bone flap, accessing the subarachnoid space, identifying and occluding feeding arteries and draining veins, and carefully removing the AVM. Intraoperative angiography confirms complete resection,...

The Influence of Liver Resection on Intrahepatic Tumor Growth
