Adult-born Neurons

Adult-born neurons are nerve cells generated from neural stem and progenitor cells after birth, providing a model for studying how the mature brain retains capacity for structural change. Through adult neurogenesis, stem cells divide, produce differentiating progenitors, and integrate newly formed neurons into existing circuits, where survival and maturation depend on local signals and neural activity. In neuroscience, research on adult-born neurons helps clarify learning, memory, mood regulation, and brain repair, while revealing how aging, stress, and disease may alter neuronal production. These findings may inform future strategies for understanding and treating neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Studying the Integration of Adult-born Neurons

A way to study the integration of newborn dentate granule cells in adult animals is described. This technique uses an engineered retrovirus to label newborn neurons, followed by electrophysiological recordings to determine in vivo functional integration.
