Aged Mice

Aged mice are laboratory mice studied after they develop biological changes associated with advancing age, providing an important model for understanding aging across tissues and organ systems. In neuroscience, aging can alter neuronal function, synaptic communication, plasticity, inflammation, and behavior through interacting cellular and molecular processes. Researchers use aged mice in behavioral testing, electrophysiology, imaging, and molecular analyses to examine changes in learning, memory, sensory processing, and vulnerability to neurological disease. Comparisons with young or middle-aged animals help distinguish normal age-related changes from disease mechanisms and evaluate potential interventions for preserving brain health.

2016

A reverse-genetics approach to understanding gene families associated with human disease is presented, using mouse as a model system, and the subsequent mouse phenotyping schedule is described. Because mice defective in a gene of interest, HtrA2, manifested Parkinsonian symptoms, the phenotyping regimen is focused on identifying neurological defects.

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...
