Bilateral Stimulation

Bilateral stimulation is the rhythmic alternation of sensory input between the left and right sides of the body or perceptual field, a method studied in neuroscience and clinical psychology. It can involve side-to-side eye movements, alternating sounds, or left-right tactile pulses, which engage attention and sensory processing across both sides of the nervous system. Researchers investigate how this stimulation may influence memory retrieval, emotional regulation, and interactions between large-scale brain networks. Its most recognized application is eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, although the neural mechanisms and therapeutic effects of bilateral stimulation remain active areas of research.

(2019)This video demonstrates the method to assess corticospinal pathways of the leg muscles using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Rest and active muscle responses are recorded from one brain hemisphere to evaluate the contralateral corticomotor function of leg muscles.
