Fetal Adult Brain

The fetal and adult brain represent distinct stages of nervous system development, with differences in structure, cellular composition, connectivity, and function that are central to neuroscience. During fetal development, neural progenitor cells generate neurons, which migrate to organized regions and establish early circuits through axon growth and synaptogenesis; after birth, experience-dependent connectivity, synaptic pruning, and myelination refine these networks. Comparing fetal and adult brains helps researchers understand normal maturation, identify developmental disruptions, and interpret findings from neuroimaging, pathology, and experimental models. This knowledge supports investigation of congenital conditions, neurodevelopmental disorders, and the long-term effects of prenatal exposures.

Progenitor-derived Oligodendrocyte Culture System from Human Fetal Brain

Primary, human fetal brain-derived, multipotential progenitor cells proliferate in vitro while maintaining the capacity to differentiate into neurons and astrocytes. This work shows that neural progenitors can be induced to differentiate through stages of the oligodendrocytic lineage by conditioning with select growth factors.

Here we provide a reproducible method to examine adult neurogenesis using a neurosphere assay derived from the whole brain or from either the telencephalic, tectal or cerebellar regions of the adult zebrafish brain. Additionally, we describe the procedure to manipulate gene expression in zebrafish neurospheres.

2010

This protocol describes three Drosophila preparations: 1) adult brain dissection, 2) adult retina dissection and 3) developing eye disc- brain complexes dissection. Emphasis is laid on special preparation techniques and conditions for live imaging, although all preparations can be used for fixed tissue immunohistochemistry.
