Neonatal Rat Cortex

Neonatal rat cortex refers to the cerebral cortical tissue of newborn rats, a widely used model for studying how the mammalian brain forms and responds during early life. During this period, neural progenitor cells and immature neurons undergo differentiation, migration, synaptogenesis, and activity-dependent circuit maturation, producing rapidly changing cortical structure and function. Researchers use neonatal cortical tissue for primary neuron cultures, electrophysiological recordings, developmental neurobiology, and investigations of injury, neurotoxicity, and neuronal regeneration. Its accessibility and developmental plasticity provide valuable insight into cellular mechanisms that shape cortical connectivity and influence later nervous-system function.

The isolation of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes is a time consuming and unpredictable procedure. This study describes methods for cryopreservation and thawing of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes that allows for more efficient use of cells. The thawed NRCMs can be used for various experiments without the need for performing isolations each time.

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.

Source: Fritsch, B. et al. Transcranial Electrical Brain Stimulation in Alert Rodents. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the implantation of electrodes and the application of transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) to the motor cortex of alert rats. It outlines the steps involved in electrode placement, stimulation delivery, and the resulting neuronal and microglial activation, highlighting its neurotherapeutic potential.
