Programmed Stimulation

Programmed stimulation is the controlled delivery of precisely timed stimuli to neural tissue or neural circuits to measure or alter their activity. In neuroscience, researchers adjust parameters such as stimulus intensity, duration, frequency, and timing to evoke action potentials, probe synaptic responses, or induce activity-dependent plasticity. This approach supports functional circuit mapping, electrophysiological experiments, and studies of how neuronal networks process information. Programmed stimulation also informs neuromodulation strategies by revealing how patterned input affects behavior, network synchronization, and recovery after injury, making it valuable for both basic research and the development of targeted neural therapies.

Programmed electrical stimulation provides the ability to determine conduction properties of the heart, and the possibility to induce and terminate cardiac arrhythmias using various pacing protocols. Using a transvenous catheter, intracardiac electrogram recordings can be obtained in mice following programmed electrical stimulation protocols to identify arrhythmogenic substrates.
