Thoracic Spine

The thoracic spine is the middle section of the vertebral column, consisting of 12 vertebrae that connect the cervical and lumbar regions and support the chest. Its vertebrae articulate with the ribs, while the spinal canal protects the thoracic spinal cord and permits spinal nerves to exit between adjacent bones. In neuroscience, the thoracic spine provides an anatomical framework for pathways that carry sensory and motor information between the trunk, limbs, and brain. Studying its structure and neural relationships supports research on posture, trunk control, spinal cord injury, pain, and disorders affecting thoracic nerve function.

Source: Gouder, et. al. Three-dimensional Quantification of Dendritic Spines from Pyramidal Neurons Derived from Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2015).This video demonstrates the imaging and analysis of dendritic spines in transduced, immunolabeled pyramidal neurons using confocal microscopy. Background noise is reduced, and dendrites are traced by estimating their diameter and length. Automated spine segmentation involves setting parameters for dendrite and spine dimensions...
