Dopamine Imbalance

Dopamine imbalance describes dysregulated dopamine signaling in the brain, a concept used to understand changes in motivation, reward processing, attention, movement, and emotional regulation. Dopamine neurons release the neurotransmitter into circuits such as the mesolimbic and prefrontal pathways, where its effects depend on production, receptor activity, reuptake, and interactions with other neural systems. In psychology, the concept helps researchers examine how altered signaling may relate to addiction, mood symptoms, attention difficulties, and movement disorders, although these conditions rarely result from dopamine levels alone. Studying dopamine pathways supports more precise assessment and informs research on behavioral interventions and pharmacological treatments.

Measuring Dopamine Uptake in Mouse Brain Synaptosomes Using Radiolabeled Dopamine

2025

This video demonstrates the assessment of dopamine uptake in synaptosomes harvested from mouse brains. It outlines steps for preparing synaptosomes for dopamine uptake via dopamine transporters, treating them with varying concentrations of radiolabeled dopamine, isolating the synaptosomes, and measuring radioactivity to quantify dopamine uptake.

Homeostatic Imbalance

2025

Homeostasis is the maintenance of a stable internal environment within the body, which is crucial for the proper functioning of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. The body has various control mechanisms that work together to regulate various physiological parameters such as temperature, blood pressure, pH balance, and fluid balance, to name a few. These control mechanisms are based on feedback loops that can be either positive or negative. However, sometimes these feedback loops fail,...

Imbalances in Cardiac Output

2025

The heart's primary function is to pump blood throughout the body, maintaining a balance between blood sent out (cardiac output) and blood returning (venous return). If this balance is disrupted, it can result in congestive heart failure (CHF), a severe condition where the heart becomes an inefficient pump, leading to inadequate blood circulation. CHF can occur due to the failure of either side of the heart. Left-side failure leads to pulmonary congestion—the right side continues to send blood...

Creating Dynamic Images of Short-lived Dopamine Fluctuations with lp-ntPET: Dopamine Movies of Cigarette Smoking

2013

We present a novel PET imaging approach for capturing dopamine fluctuations induced by cigarette smoking. Subjects smoke in the PET scanner. Dynamic PET images are modeled voxel-by-voxel in time by lp-ntPET, which includes a time-varying dopamine term. The results are 'movies' of dopamine fluctuations in the striatum during smoking.
