On Death And Dying

On death and dying is the interdisciplinary study of mortality, the dying process, bereavement, and how individuals and societies understand loss. In psychology, it examines how people appraise threats to life, regulate distress, construct meaning, and adapt through coping, attachment, communication, and social support. These processes can involve anticipatory grief before a death and continuing adjustment afterward, with responses shaped by development, culture, relationships, and personal beliefs. Knowledge of death and dying informs counseling, grief interventions, palliative and hospice care, ethical decision-making, and support for families, while helping researchers understand resilience, vulnerability, and the psychological conditions that influence end-of-life experiences.

An Introduction to Cell Death

2023

Necrosis, apoptosis, and autophagic cell death are all manners in which cells can die, and these mechanisms can be induced by different stimuli, such as cell injury, low nutrient levels, or signaling proteins. Whereas necrosis is considered to be an “accidental” or unexpected form of cell death, evidence exists that apoptosis and autophagy are both programmed and “planned” by cells. In this introductory video, JoVE highlights key discoveries pertaining to cell death, including recent work done...

Kubler Ross's Stages of Dying

2025

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross significantly advanced psychology's understanding of the process of dying with her influential book, On Death and Dying (1969). She focused on studying terminally ill individuals and outlined five stages commonly experienced when coping with death: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. In denial, individuals reject the reality of their condition, often thinking, "This isn't true; I feel fine," as a way to protect themselves from emotional distress. Anger...

Neuronal Death Assay to Evaluate Cell Death in Ex Vivo Epilepsy Model

2025

This video demonstrates the technique of assessing neuronal death in rhinal cortex-hippocampus organotypic slices. Neuronal death occurs via evolving epileptic seizures — resembling in vivo epilepsy — and is detected through dual-staining of the dead cells using propidium iodide and immunofluorescence.

We demonstrate the use of the Laser-induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) technique for flip-chip assembly of optoelectronic components. This approach provides a simple, cost-effective, low-temperature, fast and flexible solution for fine-pitch bumping and bonding on chip-scale for achieving high-density circuits for optoelectronic applications.
