La volatilisation sépare un composant souhaité, connu sous le nom d’analyte, des autres composés d’un échantillon en le convertissant en une espèce volatile par des processus tels que le chauffage contrôlé ou les réactions chimiques.
L’élimination des espèces volatiles modifie le poids de l’échantillon.
Ainsi, la mesure de la différence de poids de l'échantillon avant et après volatilisation donne la quantité d'analyte dans l'échantillon d'origine, à condition qu'aucun autre constituant ne soit volatilisé dans le processus.
Alternativement, l’analyte peut être traité avec un réactif chimique dans un récipient fermé pour le transformer en une espèce volatile chimiquement différente.
La substance volatilisée est ensuite complètement éliminée du mélange réactionnel en chauffant la solution ou en faisant bouillonner un gaz à travers le mélange. Ensuite, il est absorbé de manière sélective dans un piège pré-pesé contenant un absorbant approprié.
La différence de poids entre le piège avant et après volatilisation indique la quantité de substance volatile libérée de l’échantillon, qui est stœchiométriquement liée à la quantité d’analyte dans l’échantillon.

La gravimétrie de volatilisation est une technique analytique qui mesure la masse perdue en raison de la volatilisation de la substance. La différence de masse avant et après volatilisation donne la masse de la substance volatile, qui peut ensuite être utilisée pour calculer sa concentration dans l'échantillon d'origine. Cette approche permet de déterminer l’eau de cristallisation présente dans les composés hydratés.

Alternativement, l'échantillon peut être traité avec un réactif chimique dans un récipient fermé pour former une espèce volatile chimiquement différente avec une composition connue. La substance volatilisée est ensuite absorbée sélectivement dans un piège pré-pesé rempli d'un absorbant approprié. Par exemple, le dioxyde de carbone libéré par les composés contenant du carbonate peut être absorbé sélectivement dans la chaux sodée, et le NaOH peut être absorbé sélectivement dans un piège contenant du silicate non fibreux. Les pièges peuvent ensuite être pesés pour déterminer la quantité de matière absorbée.

Volatilization gravimetry is a way to measure mass loss in a sample by driving off a volatile substance. It helps estimate how much volatile material is present. In this method, a known amount of sample is heated to a high temperature in a crucible or another suitable vessel.

As the sample heats, the volatile substance evaporates. The vapor is then completely removed from the crucible, either by continued heating or by bubbling an inert gas through the vessel. The non-volatile part stays behind, and its mass is measured on a balance. The difference between the starting mass and the final mass gives the mass of the volatile substance. That value can be used to calculate its concentration in the original sample.

This approach is useful for finding the water of crystallization in hydrated compounds. It can also be done with a chemical reagent in a closed vessel. In that version, the sample forms a chemically different volatile species with a known composition.

The volatilized substance can then be trapped in a pre-weighed absorbent. For example, carbon dioxide released from carbonate-containing compounds can be absorbed in soda-lime. NaOH can be absorbed in a trap filled with non-fibrous silicate. The trap is weighed again to determine how much material was captured.
