Hydronium Ion Concentration

Hydronium ion concentration is the amount of H₃O⁺ present in an aqueous solution, providing a direct measure of its acidity and a foundation for understanding pH. It arises when water molecules accept protons, and pH expresses this concentration logarithmically as −log₁₀[H₃O⁺], so small changes can represent substantial shifts in acidity. In biology, hydronium levels influence protein structure, enzyme activity, membrane transport, and cellular metabolism. Buffer systems, including weak acids and their conjugate bases, help stabilize these levels in blood, cytoplasm, and organelles, while measured changes can reveal physiological dysfunction or altered biochemical conditions.

Common Ion Effect

Compared with pure water, the solubility of an ionic compound is less in aqueous solutions containing a common ion (one also produced by dissolution of the ionic compound). This is an example of a phenomenon known as the common ion effect, which is a consequence of the law of mass action that may be explained using Le Châtelier’s principle. Consider the dissolution of silver iodide: This solubility equilibrium may be shifted left by the addition of either silver(I) or iodide ions, resulting in...

Merging Ion Concentration Polarization between Juxtaposed Ion Exchange Membranes to Block the Propagation of the Polarization Zone

2017

The protocol for a novel ion concentration polarization (ICP) platform that can stop the propagation of the ICP zone, regardless of the operating conditions is described. This unique ability of the platform lies in the use of merging ion depletion and enrichment, which are two polarities of the ICP phenomenon.

Measurement of Evoked Potassium Ion Concentration Dynamics in Coronal Hippocampal Slices

2025

The video demonstrates evoked potassium ion concentration dynamics on electrical stimulation of mouse coronal hippocampal brain slices. A bipolar stimulating electrode is inserted into the stratum radiatum of the CA3 region in the hippocampus, and a potassium-ion selective electrode is placed in the CA1 stratum radiatum. The electrical stimulation causes an action potential, resulting in potassium ion release. Finally, the lack of evoked potassium ion response in the presence of an inhibitory...

Acids and Bases An Arrhenius acid produces hydrogen ions when it is dissolved in water: HA + H2O → H+(aq) + A-(aq) Here, HA is the non-dissociated acid, H+ is the hydrogen cation, and A- is the solvated anion — called the conjugate base. An Arrhenius base produces hydroxide ions when dissolved in water: BOH + H2O → B+(aq) + OH-(aq) Here, BOH is the non-dissociated base, OH- is the hydroxide ion, and B+ is the solvated cation — called the conjugate acid. A conjugate base is formed when an acid...
