Zona Pellucida

The zona pellucida is a specialized, transparent extracellular glycoprotein matrix surrounding mammalian oocytes, where it supports egg protection, fertilization, and early embryonic development. During fertilization, species-specific interactions between sperm surface proteins and zona pellucida glycoproteins promote sperm binding and the acrosome reaction, allowing sperm to penetrate the matrix; cortical granule exocytosis then modifies the zona to block polyspermy. The zona pellucida also maintains oocyte structure, protects the cleavage-stage embryo during transport through the oviduct, and is shed before implantation. Its composition and function are therefore important in reproductive biology, infertility research, assisted reproduction, and developmental studies.
