Zoonotic Diseases

Zoonotic diseases are infections that can be transmitted naturally between animals and humans, making them important to biology, public health, and ecosystem health. They arise when pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites cross species barriers through direct contact, contaminated food or water, or vectors such as mosquitoes and ticks. Transmission depends on interactions among hosts, pathogens, environments, and human activities, including land-use change and animal production. Studying zoonotic diseases supports disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, vaccination, biosecurity, and One Health strategies that integrate human, animal, and environmental health to reduce emerging infection risks.

Glass wool filters have been used to concentrate waterborne viruses by a number of research groups around the world. Here we show a simple approach for constructing glass wool filters and demonstrate the filters are also effective in concentrating waterborne viral, bacterial and protozoan pathogens.

An Overview of Genetics and Disease

2023

Many human diseases are associated with mutations or variations in genetic sequences. Some of these genetic variants are heritable, passed down from generation to generation, while others arise sporadically during an organism’s life and cause diseases such as cancer. Researchers are trying to identify and characterize these genetic alterations in the hopes of improving diagnosis and therapeutic options for patients. In this video, we will examine the history of genetic disease research, and...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Crohn's Disease

Introduction Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment. Crohn's disease Crohn's disease is a chronic, systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that predominantly affects the gastrointestinal tract. It is marked by transmural...
