Injectable Hydrogel

An injectable hydrogel is a water-rich, three-dimensional polymer network that can be delivered as a fluid and formed within a target site, making it useful for localized chemical and biomedical applications. Its polymers undergo in situ gelation through mechanisms such as covalent crosslinking, ionic interactions, or temperature- and pH-responsive assembly, transforming the precursor solution into a stable matrix. By adjusting polymer composition, crosslink density, and degradation rate, researchers can control mechanical properties, molecular transport, and release of encapsulated compounds. These materials support drug delivery, tissue engineering, wound treatment, and cell encapsulation while providing a versatile platform for studying structure–property relationships in polymer chemistry.

Supramolecular hydrogelators based on ureido-pyrimidinones allow full control over the macroscopic gel properties and the sol–gel switching behavior using pH. Here, we present a protocol for formulating and injecting such a supramolecular hydrogelator via a catheter delivery system for local delivery directly in relevant areas in the pig heart.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Hydrogels are a versatile class of cross-linked polymers produced through relatively simple procedures and with generally inexpensive materials. They can be formed from solution and involve a polymer backbone formed from monomer reagents, an initiator which makes the polymer reactive and a crosslinking species which binds the polymer chains...

Stroke is a global issue with minimal treatment options and no current clinical therapy for regenerating the lost brain tissue. Here we describe methods for creating precise photothrombotic stroke in the motor cortex of rodents and subsequent injection of hydrogel biomaterials to study their effects on tissue regeneration after stroke.
