Spe Cartridge

An SPE cartridge, or solid-phase extraction cartridge, is a sample-preparation device that isolates and concentrates target compounds from complex liquid mixtures before chemical analysis. As a sample passes through a cartridge packed with a selective sorbent, analytes are retained through mechanisms such as adsorption, partitioning, ion exchange, or affinity interactions, while matrix components are removed during washing; a suitable solvent then elutes the analytes for collection. In chemistry, SPE cartridges improve sample purity, reduce interfering substances, and support sensitive, reproducible analysis by methods such as chromatography and mass spectrometry. Sorbent selection and solvent conditions determine extraction selectivity and recovery.

2025

This video demonstrates a protocol for detecting serum-specific immunoglobulin E using a microfluidic cartridge-based chemiluminescence system. Serum IgEs interact with distinct allergens immobilized in the reaction zone of the cartridge, which are subsequently detected with peroxidase-conjugated anti-IgE antibodies and a chemiluminescent substrate, allowing simultaneous detection of multiple allergen-specific IgEs.

Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDC) pose a substantial risk to the aquatic environment. Municipal wastewater treatment plants are major contributors to the estrogenic potency of surface waters. The methodology provided in this paper allows for an assessment of the efficacy and suitability of wastewater treatment processes with respect to EDC removal.
