Cardiovascular Kidney Interaction

Cardiovascular kidney interaction describes the bidirectional relationship in which heart and blood vessel function influence the kidneys, while kidney function and fluid regulation shape cardiovascular health. Reduced cardiac output or elevated venous pressure can lower renal perfusion and activate the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone and sympathetic nervous systems, promoting sodium retention, fluid overload, and vascular dysfunction; impaired kidney function can produce similar cardiovascular stress through hypertension, inflammation, and electrolyte disturbances. Understanding these interconnected mechanisms supports recognition of cardiorenal syndromes, guides monitoring of renal and cardiac biomarkers, and informs treatment decisions involving diuretics, blood pressure control, and therapies that protect both organs.

Kidney Structure

The kidneys are two large bean-shaped organs located in the upper abdomen. They filter the blood several times a day to remove toxins and rebalance water and electrolytes of the circulatory system via the renal veins. The kidneys receive blood directly from the heart via the renal arteries. These arteries enter the kidney at the hilum, the concave surface of the bean, where they branch and divide into smaller vessels and capillaries. The renal cortex is the thick outer layer of the kidney. It...

Normothermic Machine Perfusion of Rat Kidneys for Transplantation

The administration of drugs for recovery of kidney function requires control of the localization and distribution of the therapeutic compound. Here, we describe in detail a simple technique for intrarenal delivery of drugs in rats. This procedure may be easily performed with no mortality and high reproducibility.

Vibratome Sectioning of Whole Murine Kidney: A Technique to Generate Thin Sections of Murine Kidney
