Gastric Acid Suppression

Gastric acid suppression is the reduction of hydrochloric acid secretion by stomach parietal cells, an important clinical strategy for controlling acid-related injury and symptoms. Proton pump inhibitors block the parietal-cell H+/K+-ATPase, the final pathway for acid secretion, while H2-receptor antagonists reduce stimulation of this pump by inhibiting histamine signaling; treatment therefore differs in potency, duration, and onset. Clinicians use acid suppression to manage gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcers, and conditions requiring mucosal protection, often alongside treatment for Helicobacter pylori infection. Understanding its mechanisms supports appropriate drug selection, symptom control, ulcer healing, and assessment of potential effects from prolonged therapy.

Acid Suppressive Drugs for Peptic Ulcer Disease: Antacids

2024

In the complex environment of the gastric lumen, excessive acid secretion can lead to the formation or worsening of ulcers within the delicate mucosal layer. Antacids, such as sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate, provide relief by neutralizing this acid, transforming it into harmless salt and water. This neutralization process raises the gastric pH from a highly acidic level of 1 to a more basic 3-4, reducing the acidity within the stomach. However, this neutralization reaction between...

Amblyopia is a developmental disorder of the visual cortex that is often accompanied by strong suppression of one eye. We present a new technique for measuring and treating interocular suppression in patients with amblyopia that can be deployed using virtual reality goggles or a portable iPod Touch device.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Procedure: A Bariatric Surgical Procedure for Gastric Resectioning in Murine Model

This video describes a bariatric surgery-Roux-en-Y procedure. This involves the cutting of the jejunum- the middle portion of the intestine- to generate two intestinal limbs. The biliary limb is attached to the existing intestinal loop and the alimentary limb is attached to the stomach, creating a gastric bypass. The gastric bypass created here helps to decrease the nutrient uptake and efficiently reduces body weight.

Acid Suppressive Drugs for Peptic Ulcer Disease: Proton Pump Inhibitors

2024

Peptic ulcers, often induced by H. pylori infections or NSAID usage, arise from disruptions in the delicate balance of gastric acid production. Peptic ulcers stem from heightened gastric acid levels due to H. pylori infections or NSAID use. The protective mucus layer diminishes in the presence of these factors, allowing gastric acid to erode the stomach lining and form ulcers. Gastric acid, a potent cocktail of hydrogen and chloride ions, is produced in specialized parietal cells within the...
