Thompson Test

The Thompson Test is a clinical examination used to assess the integrity of the Achilles tendon, a strong connective tissue structure that transmits force from the calf muscles to the heel. With the patient lying prone and the feet extending beyond the examination table, the clinician gently squeezes the calf and observes for passive plantarflexion of the foot. A normal response suggests continuity of the calf–Achilles–heel mechanism, whereas absent or markedly reduced plantarflexion raises concern for Achilles tendon rupture. The test provides a rapid bedside assessment in acute ankle injuries and helps guide further evaluation, including imaging and treatment planning.

Plant resistance to chewing insect herbivores can be tested in several ways. Here, we demonstrate how to set-up a choice and a no-choice experiment with the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana to identify resistance against the pest species Pieris rapae.

Mating and Tetrad Separation of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii for Genetic Analysis

Mating and tetrad separation are required for genetic analysis in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Here we demonstrate standard methods for gametogenesis, mating, zygote germination and tetrad dissection. This protocol consists of an easy-to-follow series of steps that will make genetic approaches amenable to scientists who are less familiar with Chlamydomonas.
