Heart Progenitors

Heart progenitors are early embryonic cells that give rise to the heart’s specialized tissues, making them central to understanding how cardiac structure and function emerge. During development, localized signaling cues such as BMP, FGF, and Wnt regulate their specification, migration, proliferation, and differentiation into cardiomyocytes, smooth muscle cells, and vascular cells. In developmental biology, studying these populations clarifies congenital heart formation and the coordination of cardiac morphogenesis, while progenitor-based models support research into heart disease, drug responses, and strategies for cardiac repair.

Developmental studies in the mouse are hampered by the inaccessibility of the embryo during gestation. To promote the long-term culture of the embryonic heart at late stages of gestation, we developed a protocol in which the excised heart is cultured in a semi-solid, dilute Matrigel.
