Rar Mutation

An RAR mutation is a genetic alteration in a retinoic acid receptor gene that can change how cells interpret retinoic acid, a signaling molecule essential for embryonic patterning and tissue development. RARs are nuclear receptors that bind retinoic acid, interact with DNA at retinoic acid response elements, and recruit coregulators to activate or repress developmental genes; mutations may disrupt ligand binding, DNA binding, or transcriptional control. In developmental biology, studying RAR mutations helps reveal how retinoic acid gradients regulate body-axis formation, organ development, and cell differentiation, while providing insight into congenital abnormalities and gene-regulatory mechanisms.

Viral Mutations

A mutation is a change in the sequence of bases of DNA or RNA in a genome. Some mutations occur during replication of the genome due to errors made by the polymerase enzymes that replicate DNA or RNA. Unlike DNA polymerase, RNA polymerase is prone to errors because it is not capable of “proofreading” its work. Viruses with RNA-based genomes, like HIV, therefore accrue mutations faster than viruses with DNA-based genomes. Because mutation and recombination provide the raw material for adaptive...

Mutations are changes in the sequence of DNA. These changes can occur spontaneously or they can be induced by exposure to environmental factors. Mutations can be characterized in a number of different ways: whether and how they alter the amino acid sequence of the protein, whether they occur over a small or large area of DNA, and whether they occur in somatic cells or germline cells. Chromosomal Alterations Are Large-Scale Mutations While point mutations are changes in a single nucleotide in...

Mutations are changes in the sequence of DNA. These changes can occur spontaneously during DNA replication or be induced by environmental factors. Mutations can be characterized in several ways: by whether and how they alter the amino acid sequence of the protein, by the scale of the DNA affected, and by whether they affect somatic or germline cells.Consequences of Point Mutations at the Molecular LevelMutations that affect a single nucleotide are called point mutations. When point mutations...
