Muscle Force Measurement

Muscle force measurement is the quantitative assessment of the tension or load produced by a muscle, providing a direct indicator of contractile performance. In a typical assay, electrical or mechanical stimulation activates muscle fibers, while a force transducer records the resulting contraction under controlled conditions; measurements may include peak force, contraction speed, and fatigue. In genetics, these data help link gene variants or engineered mutations to muscle function by revealing changes in excitation-contraction performance, fiber properties, or disease-related weakness. The approach supports phenotyping in model organisms, evaluation of muscular disorders, and testing of genetic or pharmacological interventions.

Analysis of the contractile properties of chemically skinned, or permeabilized, skeletal muscle fibers offers a powerful means by which to assess muscle function at the level of the single muscle cell. In this article we outline a valid and reliable technique to prepare and test permeabilized skeletal muscle fibers in vitro.

2026

An accessible, low-cost apparatus for measuring human muscle force–velocity–power relationships was developed using inexpensive materials, a 3D-printed gear, a smartphone accelerometer, and Python freeware. Validation against a gold-standard ergometer demonstrated physiologically relevant measurements while providing equitable, hands-on learning opportunities in an undergraduate classroom setting.

We have developed a device (Twister) to study the regulation of tonic muscle activity during active postural maintenance. Twister measures torsional resistance and muscular responses in standing subjects during twisting of the body axis. The device can be flexibly configured to study various aspects of tonic control across the neck, trunk, and/or hips.
