Laminotomy

Laminotomy is a spine surgery that removes a portion of a vertebral lamina, the bony plate forming the back of the spinal canal, to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. During the procedure, a surgeon creates a targeted opening in the lamina, often removing additional tissue such as a ligament or herniated disc material when necessary, while preserving more posterior bone than a laminectomy. This decompression can treat selected cases of spinal stenosis, nerve compression, or other space-occupying lesions, helping reduce pain, numbness, and weakness while providing access for procedures involving the spinal canal.

We describe a method for laminotomy in swine that provides access to lumbar dorsal root ganglia (DRG) for intraganglionic injection. Injection progress is monitored intraoperatively and histologically confirmed up to 21 days after surgery. This protocol could be used for future preclinical studies involving DRG injection.
