Mechanical Stimulation Testing

Mechanical stimulation testing is a method that applies controlled physical forces to biological tissues, cells, or medical materials to measure their mechanical and functional responses. The test may use compression, tension, shear, or cyclic loading while recording variables such as force, displacement, deformation, and recovery; in living systems, these forces can also activate mechanotransduction pathways that alter cell behavior. In medicine, mechanical stimulation testing supports the evaluation of tissue biomechanics, implant performance, wound healing, rehabilitation strategies, and musculoskeletal disorders. By linking applied forces to structural or biological outcomes, it helps researchers assess safety, function, and treatment effectiveness.

Passive mechanical testing of mouse carotid arteries is described, with special consideration for adapting to different specimen ages. The procedures include determining the in vivo length of the artery, mounting it in a pressure myograph, recording data, measuring the unloaded dimensions and analyzing the resulting data.

An Improved Mechanical Testing Method to Assess Bone-implant Anchorage

An improved method to mechanically test bone anchorage to candidate implant surfaces is presented. This method allows for alignment of the disruption force exactly perpendicular, or parallel, to the plane of the implant surface, and provides an accurate means to direct the disruption forces to an exact peri-implant region.

A Testing Platform for Durability Studies of Polymers and Fiber-reinforced Polymer Composites under Concurrent Hygrothermo-mechanical Stimuli

2014

The durability of polymers and fiber-reinforced polymer composites in service is a critical aspect for their designs and condition-based maintenance. We present a novel low-cost laboratory testing platform for the investigation of the influence of concurrent mechanical and environmental loadings, and may help design more efficient yet safer composite structures.
