Paw Withdrawal

Paw withdrawal is a protective nociceptive reflex in which an animal rapidly retracts its paw after a potentially harmful stimulus, making it an important measure of sensory and pain-related responses in medicine. A noxious thermal, mechanical, or chemical stimulus activates peripheral nociceptors, whose afferent signals reach the spinal cord and engage interneurons and motor neurons controlling flexor muscles. Researchers quantify withdrawal latency, force threshold, or response frequency in preclinical models to assess hyperalgesia, analgesic efficacy, and sensory nerve function. Although the reflex does not directly measure conscious pain, standardized paw-withdrawal assays help evaluate pain mechanisms and therapeutic candidates.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Blood collection is a common requirement for research studies that involve mice and rats. The method of blood withdrawal in mice and rats is dependent upon the volume of blood needed, the frequency of the sampling, the health status of the animal to be bled, and the skill level of the technician. All methods discussed-retro-orbital sinus bleeds, initial tail snip bleeds, and intracardiac...

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The collection of blood from mice and rats for analysis can be done through a variety of methods. Each method of collection has variations in the type of restraint required, the invasiveness of the procedure, and the necessity of a general anesthetic.1Historically, the use of the retro-orbital sinus cavity has been used, but not without debate. The controversy related to the potential tissue...

Electronic von Frey measurements are an effective and improved alternative to classical von Frey filaments, as they allow rapid and precise measurement of changes in rodent mechanical withdrawal thresholds to continuously applied pressure stimuli before and after an inflammatory event.

Paw-Dragging: a Novel, Sensitive Analysis of the Mouse Cylinder Test

Classical forelimb asymmetry analysis of the cylinder test is routinely used to assess behavioural deficits in rats following brain injury or stroke; however, it fails to detect consistent deficits in mice. This study demonstrates that quantifying paw-dragging behaviour is a more sensitive analysis of brain injury in mice.

Withdrawal of a Partner

2026

A partner's withdrawal from a partnership signifies a significant change in the firm's composition, typically occurring due to voluntary retirement, health concerns, or other personal decisions. This event necessitates several accounting adjustments to ensure a fair settlement for the departing partner while maintaining the equity of continuing partners. The process involves determining the partner’s final capital balance by adjusting for their share in accumulated profits, reserves,...
