Recruitment Curve

A recruitment curve is a graph that relates stimulus intensity to the size or probability of a neural response, revealing how neural populations become engaged as input increases. In neuroscience experiments, weak stimulation activates the most excitable neurons first; progressively stronger stimuli recruit additional axons, motor units, or circuit elements, producing a characteristic increase that may eventually plateau. Researchers use recruitment curves to quantify neuronal and corticospinal excitability, compare responses across conditions, and assess changes caused by learning, injury, disease, or neuromodulation. Their slope, threshold, and maximum response provide complementary measures of neural function and help distinguish altered recruitment from changes in synaptic or muscular responsiveness.

An In Vitro Flow Investigation of the Effect of Stromal Cells on Leukocyte Recruitment

2025

The video demonstrates a method for investigating the impact of stromal cells on leukocyte recruitment. In a parallel plate flow chamber model, pro-inflammatory cytokines induce the expression of adhesion receptors by endothelial cells, facilitating neutrophil recruitment and migration. The cross-talk between stromal cells and endothelial cells diminishes neutrophil recruitment to the endothelial cells.

The ability of inflamed endothelium to recruit leukocytes from flow is regulated by mesenchymal stromal cells. We describe two in vitro models incorporating primary human cells that can be used to assess neutrophil recruitment from flow and examine the role that mesenchymal stromal cells play in regulating this process.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Calibration curves are used to understand the instrumental response to an analyte and predict the concentration in an unknown sample. Generally, a set of standard samples are made at various concentrations with a range than includes the unknown of interest and the instrumental response at each concentration is recorded. For more accuracy and to understand the error, the response at each concentration can be repeated so an error...

Monitoring Neutrophil Recruitment Dynamics and Bacterial Burden at the Infection Site in a Murine Model

2025

This video demonstrates in vivo imaging to study the neutrophil recruitment dynamics at an infection site in an immunocompromised, transgenic mouse with GFP-expressing neutrophils. It involves injecting luminescent bacteria to cause an infection. This leads to neutrophil recruitment to the infection site, whose tracking is done by imaging.
