Recollection Familiarity

Recollection familiarity describes two complementary processes that support recognition memory: recollection retrieves specific information about a prior event, whereas familiarity produces a sense that an item was encountered before without recovering its context. During recognition, the mind can therefore identify a face, word, or object through detailed episodic retrieval or through a more general memory signal based on prior exposure. Psychologists study these processes using recognition tests, remember-know judgments, and experimental manipulations of encoding and retrieval. Their distinction helps explain memory performance across learning, aging, amnesia, eyewitness identification, and other areas of cognitive research.

The Familiarity Bias

2026

Familiarity bias is a psychological tendency in which investors prefer well-known assets and avoid unfamiliar investments, often to the detriment of their portfolios. This bias arises from an aversion to uncertainty and a fear of negative outcomes associated with lesser-known financial instruments. While investors may believe they are making safer choices, their reluctance to explore a broader range of assets can lead to suboptimal diversification and increased risk exposure.Familiarity bias...

A Familiarization Protocol Facilitates the Participation of Children with ASD in Electrophysiological Research

Electrophysiological research is an important tool for identifying biomarkers of developmental disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), but data collection in these populations remains challenging. This work presents a familiarization protocol to accompany research that includes electroencephalography (EEG) to improve the likelihood of collecting EEG data from children with ASD.

Learning and Memory: The Remember-Know Task

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Our experience of memory is varied and complex. Sometimes we remember events in vivid detail, while other times we may only have a vague sense of familiarity. Memory researchers have made a distinction between memories that are recollected versus those that are familiar. A recollected item is one that is not only remembered, but carries with it details of the time at which it was learned or encoded.

Efficient and Rapid Isolation of Early-stage Embryos from Arabidopsis thaliana Seeds

We report an efficient and simple method to isolate embryos at early stages of development from Arabidopsis thaliana seeds. Up to 40 embryos can be isolated in 1 hr to 4 hr, depending on the downstream application. The procedure is suitable for transcriptome, DNA methylation, reporter gene expression, immunostaining and fluorescence in situ hybridization analyses.
