Chemical Storage: Categories, Hazards And Compatibilities

Safe chemical storage and labeling help prevent dangerous reactions in school and research labs. Chemicals can vary widely in their properties and reactivity, so they must be managed, stored, and labeled correctly as part of an Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program.

If chemicals are not handled properly, they can create harmful or even destructive results. These risks include toxic fume production, fire, explosion, human fatality, property damage, and environmental hazards. Proper storage reduces many of these chemical reactivity hazards.

A chemical label should identify the material and list the associated hazards. Users also need to know how to read chemical labels and safety data sheets, or SDS. Safe storage should follow OSHA (Occupational Health and Safety Association) standards.
