הטבעה גנומית היא תופעה שבה ויסות ביטוי הגנים מושפע מאיזה הורה העביר את הגן לצאצאיו.
תאים סומטיים של אורגניזמים רבים, כגון יונקים, הם דיפלואידים, כלומר יש להם שני עותקים של הגנום - אחד בירושה מהאב ואחד מהאם. עותקים של אותו גן בתאים סומטיים ידועים בשם אללים. 
ברוב המקרים, שני האללים באים לידי ביטוי בו זמנית. עם זאת, מספר קטן של גנים באים לידי ביטוי בהתאם למקור הירושה, בשל חותם או סימן המלווה את הגן, כגון מתילציה. 
מתילציה זו עמידה בפני דה-מתילציה המתרחשת לאחר ההפריה ולכן עוברת בירושה על ידי הצאצאים. מתילציה של דנ"א יכולה לווסת באופן חיובי או שלילי ביטוי גנים. 
בעכברים, העותק של הגן גורם גדילה דמוי אינסולין-2 בירושה מהאם מושתק, ואילו העותק מהאב מבוטא עקב הטבעה.
רצף דנ"א רגולטורי מדכא את הגן גורם גדילה דמוי אינסולין-2 כאשר חלבון מבודד נקשר. עבור האלל העובר בירושה מהאם, היעדר מתילציה גורם לדיכוי הגן על ידי החלבון המבודד.
עבור האלל מהאב, מתילציה ברצף זה משפיעה באופן חיובי על ביטוי האלל בכך שהיא מונעת מהחלבון להיקשר, וכתוצאה מכך ביטוי גנים.
הטבעה גנומית יכולה להזיק לצאצא כאשר האלל המתבטא בדרך כלל עובר מוטציה. בניגוד לרוב הגנים, האלל השני אינו יכול לפצות על המוטציה עקב השתקה על ידי הטבעה גנומית. 
לדוגמה, מעכב קינאז תלוי ציקלין 1C הוא גן מקודד חלבון האחראי על אפנון חלוקת התא. הטבעה גנומית מבטיחה ביטוי של האלל האימהי בלבד. היעדרו או מוטציה של האלל האימהי תורמת למצב המכונה תסמונת Beckwith-Wiedemann המאופיינת בגודל גוף גדול, לשון גדולה ובליטה של איברים פנימיים מחוץ לגוף דרך כפתור הבטן.

אורגניזמים דיפלואידים יורשים חומר גנטי דרך כרומוזומים משני ההורים. עותקים של אותו גן ידועים בשם אללים. ברוב המקרים שני האללים באים לידי ביטוי בו זמנית ומאפשרים לתהליכים תאיים שונים לפעול לתפקד בצורה אופטימלית. אם אחד מהאללים חסר או עבר מוטציה, הביטוי של האלל השני יכול לפצות; עם זאת, זה לא נכון לכל הגנים.

Genomic imprinting affects how some inherited genes are turned on or off in human cells. Diploid organisms inherit chromosomes from both parents, and each gene usually has two alleles. In most cases, both alleles are expressed. If one allele is missing or mutated, the other can often compensate, but some genes do not work that way.

In genomic imprinting, a gene or its regulatory sequence carries chemical tags, such as methyl groups, on the copy inherited from only one parent. These tags are resistant to demethylation during fertilization. That means the imprint can survive into the offspring and help control which allele is expressed.

Problems can occur when both copies of a gene come from the same parent. Maternal uniparental disomy means two maternal copies are present, while paternal uniparental disomy means two paternal copies are present. If the active allele is missing and the silenced allele is inherited twice, a genetic disorder may result.

Human diseases linked to genomic imprinting include Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, and some cancers. Prader-Willi syndrome is associated with maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 15. It can cause obesity, sexual under-development, and mental disabilities. Angelman syndrome is linked to paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 15. It may cause mental disabilities, developmental deficiencies, sleep disorders, and hyperactivity.
